X Chat Launch: Bringing Calls, Groups, and Encryption to X

X Chat app interface showing encrypted messaging, group chats, and voice calling features on the X platform.

When Elon Musk talks about building an “everything app,” it often seems like a far-off goal. However, with the launch of X Chat, that vision is starting to feel tangible.

It begins quietly, inside X itself. There’s no need to download a separate app or go through a complicated setup. If you already have an account, you can jump right into a new way of messaging.

Launched on iOS on April 24, X Chat offers a familiar but improved experience. You can send messages, start video calls, share files, and create large group chats – all within the same platform where conversations used to exist only in public posts. Android users are still waiting for an official release date, but the direction is already clear.

At its heart, X Chat focuses on end-to-end encryption. This positions it as a secure communication tool for both iOS and Android users. Musk is not merely adding a feature; he aims to change how people interact online by combining private and public communication in one place.

However, like any developing product, it comes with questions.

Security researcher Tommy Mysk pointed out Apple’s iOS privacy label for X Chat, highlighting the range of data the platform might collect. His comment, “No ads. No tracking. Fully end-to-end encrypted. But it collects all this data,” stirred discussions about balancing convenience and privacy.

Meanwhile, X is preparing for a change in how communities interact. Traditional Communities will go dark on May 30, making way for more dynamic group interactions within X Chat. Currently, group chats can accommodate up to 350 users, with plans to increase that limit to 1,000. This indicates a shift toward larger, more active digital spaces.

So what does this mean for users?

It means messaging is no longer just about sending texts; it’s about staying connected without leaving the platform. Whether it’s chatting with friends, hosting group discussions, or jumping on a quick call, X Chat aims to make communication seamless.

For now, it’s an ongoing experiment. But if it succeeds, it could change our expectations for a single app.
